Hey Girl Hey!

I'm Javonne Crumby, creator of Lesbionyx-- A space for queer women of color. As a Black woman who loves women, I grew tired of the lack of representation and resources for women like me. So I created a platform for us and by us, because no one tells our stories like us!

The 3 Poisons of the Mind that Prevent Success

The 3 Poisons of the Mind that Prevent Success

What if you were standing in your own way? What if you were your own enemy, and you had no idea? Many of us are trying our best to push forward, using all of our skills and still not understanding why we aren’t moving towards success. Sometimes the biggest obstacle standing in your way of success and a successful mindset is you. There are three poisons of the mind that obstruct our view. Unless you are fully aware they exist and how to control it, they will control you. These three poisons are attachment, hatred and ignorance. These three traits are dangerous to the mind. They prevent us from moving forward, they fill our minds with unhappiness and cause us to make unethical decisions. So let’s break it down:

1.     Attachment

The mind has a natural tendency to attach to the past and future, but rarely the present. We usually remember bad things from our past and promise to make the future better. Sometimes we focus our energy on what didn’t go right. You manifest your world through experiences, both positive and negative. Your mind and ego will naturally attach to the negative memories and subconsciously predict your future. Even though you tell your mind that your future will be a certain way, your ego will harbor those negative memories you’re attached to. When you don’t accomplish what you set out to do, you’ll justify it with those negative memories. Instead of giving your all and focusing on success, your attempts fall short by your own fault. Attachment prevents the power choose.

2.     Hatred

Hatred is its own disease. Being in marginalized communities, you've likely experienced hatred in some form. Whether it's not being accepted by family or society, being told we don’t have equal rights, being cut off from family, those ugly hateful protesters at PRIDE Parades (especially in the South) the list goes on! Hatred is a disease that consumes the mind with negative thoughts. All negativity in any form is resistance. As stated in the book The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle “Once you have identified with some form of negativity, you don’t want to let it go, and on a deeply unconscious level, you do not want positive change.” So…let it go. Until you focus on the present and not let the past or any hatred or negativity consume you, you won’t move forward. It will weigh you down, make you sad, turn your focus in the wrong direction and consume the energy you need for success. The mind is powerful, and without knowledge, it is in control.

3.    Ignorance

Ignorance or “not knowing” is its own downfall. It is especially dangerous when coupled with hatred. Ignorance has the power to create false views, a false reality and uneducated decisions. In order to be successful, you must be knowledgeable. The problem with ignorance is that false views tend to flourish rapidly. We in the gay community bare witness to that all the time. Ignorance will have you identifying with a made up world and responding to that fantasy. How many times do straight people get it wrong when they think they know us? That is ignorance at its finest.

In order to be your best self, get out of your own way and flourish to the greatness that your are, avoid these three poisons by acknowledging their presence. Attachment will prevent you from choosing your own future. Hatred will manifest your future through a negative past. Ignorance will create a false reality. Instead, focus on love, wisdom and giving. Spread love always and you will manifest just that. Learn, learn and learn more and you will free your mind and soar to success. Lastly, always give. Give to others, give to yourself and give to society. Follow these three traits and success is inevitable. Strive for greatness and be mindful of the three poisons of the mind. As long as you are aware, you are in control.
