Trans Woman Brooklyn BreYanna Stevenson Found Dead in Motel
Brooklyn BreYanna Stevenson, 31, was found dead in an Oklahoma City motel by police Monday morning. Police were called to the Oxford Inn around 2:30 a.m. in response to disturbance calls. The officers report her injuries were consistent with a homicide. No arrests have been made in connection to Stevenson's murder. While the motive remains unknown, Stevenson is the 26th trans person murdered in 2017 and the 20th trans person of color murdered this year. Her family issued a statement Monday night, “We are heartbroken. Brooklyn BreYanna was an amazing daughter, sister and friend with a giving and loving heart. We pray that those who committed this heinous crime will be identified and Brooklyn will receive justice.”
Trans advocate Paula Sophia Schonauer said, "When I found out (Monday) night, it broke my heart. I’ve gotten to know Brooklyn a little bit. I knew how hard she was trying and how much she was working to establish her identity and to establish a place in the world for herself." Stevenson's family has set up a Go Fund Me to cover the burial costs of her untimely death. You can donate here. This story will be updated as more news develops.
