Kehlani Honored at Billboard Women in Music 2017 Awards
Kehlani was honored with the 'Rule Breaker' Award at the Billboard Women in Music 2017 Awards on Thursday. Her win proving to be timely with the recent release of her latest track Already Won. The award was presented by her mentor, Nick Cannon, who met Kehlani when she was a contestant on season six of America's Got Talent. She was presented the award following the performance of her acoustic (and unapologetically queer) song Honey. During her speech she recalled the history of her and Cannon's mentorship. "He literally called me and said 'yo, if you finish high school, I will bring you to Los Angeles, and let you work in my studio. And I will give you an apartment, so you can have a place to lay your head for the first time in years." The once homeless singer, referred to Cannon as her "guardian angel."
Kehlani showed humility and humor during her speech while shouting out a teary-eyed Kelly Clarkson. "All my life i've been outspoken, whether it be something that goes on in politics or something that goes on socially-- I can't help it, i'm a Taurus. Me and Kelly Clarkson got the same birthday, hey girl!" Clarkson was awarded the 'Powerhouse' Award that evening. Kehlani took to her Instagram to post photos commemorating the evening, including photos of her with Pharrell, Solange, and of course Nick Cannon (shown in slideshow above). Kehlani was recently announced as a nominee for the 2018 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Performance for her single Distraction. She is also breaking into the tech scene, with the upcoming launch of her green living app, Flora. Kehlani is undoubtedly deserving of this honor.
